DIY Fabric Basket!

I love these baskets I discovered on Pinterest!   My linen closet is looking better  a LITTLE better!!  It still has a LONG way to go but it's getting there!  I don't know about you but my baskets have huge gaps in them and all the "small stuff" like bandages, ointments etc kept falling out of them and driving me CRAZY!!  So, when I saw this idea, I had JUST the place for it!

Here is what you will need:
*fabric of your choice
*basket
*elmers spray bond (pic below)
*good pair of scissors

TIP: Before you start, you will want to cover your surface that you are using, the glue is POTENT and hubby swears I ruined our kitchen table using this stuff (he doesn't realize he ruined it along time ago by burning a hole in it soldering, but that's another story).  So, cover your area!   Also take off any jewelry or watches, because seriously this stuff is YUCKY (and you will glue your fingers together...don't ask).

This is my basket before, unorganized and things were falling out every time I went to look for something.  I HATED this method, but it came with the house, so I used what I had.

First you want to measure out your fabric of how much your going to need.

Cut it out and lay right side down.

Next spray the fabric down with the glue.

Manipulate the fabric around the basket.   Mine always have an "opening in the bottom" so I just cut a rectangle piece of fabric out and place it in the bottom. Now it will look like this...

Never tell there was an opening there :)

Let the basket dry at least a few hours.  I usually put mine outside on the sun porch and they dry quicker.

Here is what they look like in my linen closet...MUCH better than those ecky white baskets!
Yep, ignore the rest of my linen closet, it's still a work in progress.  I'm looking up ideas on pinterest how to re-organize it :)

Next week....a baby shower gift!!  A decorative wipe case!

Bottle cap necklace and magnets

The reason I decided to make these is because my husband and I are leaving for vacation in a few short weeks.  We are only taking our carry on luggage.  To make sure I'm not scrambling the day before I made sure everything was going to fit and did a "trial run" of packing.

Well, needless to say I now have a VERY attached 4 year old who does NOT want mommy and daddy to get on an airplane without her! BUT she said that a strawberry shortcake necklace would "make her brave" at the airport when mommy and daddy left.

So, the day we leave, our son and daughter will get a bag of little goodies right before we get on the plane.

Oh, what we won't do for our children.

So, here is step by step instructions on how to make bottle cap necklaces AND bottle cap magnets.

Here is what you will need
*bottle caps
*1 inch epoxy dots
*pictures
*1 inch circle punch (Fiskars)
*E6000 glue
*1/16 hole punch (Fiskars)
*necklace (pictured below)
*Split rings (pictured below)

TIP:You may take a regular bottle cap and spray paint them to give them that extra pop instead of buying the colored bottle caps (their expensive).  Just make sure to let them dry a FULL 24 HOURS!!  I didn't, I was rushing them and only let them dry 12 hours and when I put on the glue, it bubbled and ruined my picture :( Epic fail moment!  So make sure you let them dry the full 24 hours!

Take your 1 inch circle punch and punch out each of your pictures, you can either buy these pictures on ETSY, make your own or go to my ETSY store and I can customize them for you!!

BTW, ignore my green munchkin hands (I was spray painting bottle caps) :)

This is what you will end up with.

Add some glue (generously)

Put the picture in place

Peel the epoxy dot VERY carefully!!  You do not want fingerprints on your epoxy dot because it will show on  your picture!

Here's what it looks like :)

If you want it to be a magnet, add a little glue to the back.  If you want to make it into a necklace, keep scrolling...

add the magnet and now you have a bottle cap picture magnet

Now, if you want to make it into a necklace

Punch a hole with your 1/16 inch hole punch

Add a split ring and slide onto necklace

Here is your finished product :)

You can also make these for boys!  They just aren't girl necklaces!!

Add to your fridge and enjoy what YOU created!!!

Next week, fabric basket!

Custom picture frame tile

This week I wanted to show you how I made a picture frame out of tile.  I made these for my kids grandparents this year and they LOVED them!!!  They are super easy to make and VERY inexpensive!

Here is what you need to start:
*scrap paper
*tile of any size (I like the 6x6 best)
*tape measure
*mod podge
*paint brush
*favorite picture
*X Acto knife

First measure the tile to make sure you know the size of the picture you need

Measure the scrap paper out

Add a thin layer of mod podge

Place the scrap paper on the tile

TIP: Make sure it is pretty spot on as you only have a couple millimeters to move the paper once it's placed on there.

Add another thin layer of mod podge
TIP: Work QUICKLY as it dries pretty quick!

Place your picture where you want it (ignore the light reflection as I just snapped b/c of the drying time).

Add another THICK layer of Mod Podge

Let dry and add 1-2 more layers until hard.
Trim the sides of the tile if needed.

This project is VERY simple and everyone loves them!!  Add an easel and you or your loved one can display them anywhere in their home!

As always, if you have any questions please ask.  Next week, bottle cap necklaces and magnets!

Dress up dresser

I have to say this is my FAVORITE pinterest idea I have gotten to date and it's the most time consuming.  This project took me about 2 weeks to complete just because between sports and extracurricular activities I  didn't have time to sit down for an hour at a time and put on layers.

I'm sorry in advance in there isn't more detailed pictures, I wasn't planning on this project working or making this blog so I took the pictures for facebook purpose to show off my work, not for a tutorial :(

When you start this project you want to make sure you have a complete hour to put on each layer.  Once you start a layer you really don't want to stop.

Items you will need:

VERY CHEAP dresser
paint color you want
matching/coordinating scrapbook paper
modge podge
hammer/screw driver
paint brush
knobs (optional)
shower curtain rod (the twistable kind)
X acto knife
matching baskets (optional)

Here is my VERY CHEAP dresser.  I found this dresser at a yard sale for 5.00 (figured if I messed it up, I only lost 5.00 in the process).

and my supplies

To start I took all the drawers out of the dresser and took off the side rails (this is where you need the hammer mine were buggers).  You can throw the drawers away just make sure to keep a few knobs!

yes, there is a hole in the bottom, it will be ok we will fix it later.

Paint the dresser whatever color you are wanting.  I chose black because I have a boy and a girl so I wanted it for BOTH of their dress up clothes not just one.  Gotta have somewhere to put all that fire/police/army gear too!

If you're going to add knobs this is when you want to do it, I learned this the hard way and got sawdust all over the bottom (which is NOT easy to clean up).  Drill a hole in the side of the dresser and put the knobs on.

To make the knobs pretty and match your dress up dresser, you are going to tear up a piece of scrapbook paper in about 1 by 1 inch pieces.  DO NOT CUT, tear them if gives it a nicer look.  You are going to hold the knob in your hand and apply modge podge to the knob, then put the scrapbook pieces on the knob wrapping it around.  Once you have the scrapbook paper on how you like it, modge podge over top of it.  I would put AT LEAST 2 coats of modge podge over top of the knob.  Once dry, put the knobs on the side of the dresser.

Sorry no picture for the next step :(

Here is where you want to add your bottom board.  I had my husband cut me a square out of a piece of plywood (actually it was the bottom of an old crib).  He measured the bottom and cut me a square to fit in the hole.  I then painted it black and now I have somewhere to set my baskets

Next, you are going to modge podge the top.  I learned this the hard way, WORK IN SECTIONS! The first time I tried to cover the entire top the modge podge and lay everything down and it started to bubble and was an EPIC FAIL! So, learn from me, work in sections!!

TIP: Rip your scrap paper into strips before you start and put them in a box so all you have to do is grab a strip and keep going.

What you want to do is with your paintbrush put a layer of modge podge down, lay a strip down and then put a layer of modge podge on top of the scrap paper strip to make it smooth.  Then put modge podge on the dresser, add a strip and more modge podge on top.  Keep repeating until the entire dresser is done.

I put the scrapbook paper criss-cross, horizontal, vertical and every way possible.  When you are near the edges just fold the scrapbook paper around the edges.  Once it's dry you can take your X acto knife and clean up the edges.

I also put the scrap paper at the bottom of the dresser also to give it a little pop.

Once you have all your scrap paper down and it's dry.  Put TWO coats of modge podge over the paper.  Paint a layer of modge podge over the scrapbook paper, let it dry and apply another coat.  It should be shiny and VERY hard!

Once it's dry add the shower curtain rod , add your baskets and hang your dress up clothes.

This project is VERY time consuming but it's worth it in the end, the kids now have somewhere for their dress up clothes (besides the floor) and it looks nice too!

Next week...tile photo frame!
